* Not quite a review: Sid Dorfman on Tris Speaker

5 06 2008

Tris who?

Sid Dorfman laments the anonymity that has befallen Hall of Fame outfielder Tris Speaker, who was the centerfielder before Mantle and Mays came along.

Dorfman is a local legend here in Jersey. He’s been writing for the Newark Star-Ledger for more than 70 years, our version of The Washington Post’s Shirley Povich. There’s an excellent piece by Tony Kornheiser, written as a eulogy for Povich (who died in 1998), in which the old-timer recalled speaking with Walter Johnson about who was the better pitcher: Lefty Grove or Bob Feller, knocking the literary socks off his young Post college.

As such, Dorfman occasionally reminisces about his old-time favorites. Hence this piece the lack of respect received by Hall of Fame outfielder Tris Speaker and the bookabout him by Charles Alexander.
