* Get your Bill James Freak-on (omics)

2 04 2008

I’ve never been one for the science of economics. Markets, demand, supply, agriculture…all beyond my limited mental capacity.

However, I did love Freakonomics by Steven D. Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner. It opens a lot or doors for thinking about things that one would not associate with economics (Which is more dangerous: a gun or a swimming pool?).

The co-authors now write a column for The New York Times. Dubner conducted a fascinating Q&A with Bill James, who was the subject of a recent 60 Minutes segment. (You can read about James’ appearance and see some video clips here.)

If I had my academic career to do over again, I’d go into that discipline; it doesn’t seem as dry now as it did then.
